Laurentino Gomes and Ferreira Gullar, Premio Jabuti 2011
The 53rd Prêmio Jabuti, perhaps the most prestigious and important awards in the Brazilian publishing industry, were awarded earlier this month. Among the winners were Ferreira Gullar who took home Fiction Book of the Year for Em alguma parte alguma (publisher José Olympio), and journalist Laurentino Gomes winning Non Fiction Book of the Year for 1822 (Nova Fronteira).
The two categories are the most important of Jabuti and each author was given R$30,000 (US$16,000). The award, organized by Camara Brasileira do Livro, the national association for the book industry, also recognize 29 other categories, including best cover art, children’s books and, technical publications. For each of these, three winners are announced, with the top winner receiving R$3,000 (US$1,600).
